Aluminium door respray
Change the colour of sound aluminium doors without replacing the whole assembly. We respray sliding, stacker and bifold frames onsite, helping doors and windows work together in a whole-home colour change.
Which aluminium doors can be resprayed?
Sliding, stacker and bifold aluminium doors can be candidates for respraying when the frames and existing finish are suitable. This is particularly useful when dated door colours interrupt an otherwise coordinated renovation.
Large glazed openings occupy plenty of visible wall space. Including them in the same scope as windows can make a whole-home colour change more consistent. We assess the exposed frame faces, moving panels and adjoining finishes before recommending what to coat. Respraying changes appearance, not the performance of worn rollers or hinges.
How are aluminium doors prepared and painted?
We clean and prepare the existing finish, protect adjacent surfaces and apply a compatible liquid coating using electrostatic spray equipment. Electrocoat uses charged spray with Kremlin equipment, rather than applying a new factory powder coat onsite.
Preparation depends on whether the doors have a sound powder coat, an anodised surface or an older painted finish. Glass, seals, locks and working tracks need careful protection. Panel positions and access to returns are considered before spraying so moving contact areas are not treated like ordinary visible frame faces.
How long does an aluminium door respray take?
Timing depends on the number of openings, door configuration, preparation and site conditions. A bifold assembly with many edges can require more detailed masking than a simpler fixed surround.
We agree on an access sequence before work begins, especially where the doors are the main route to a garden or balcony. Drying, recoating and return to normal use depend on the selected product system and conditions. Do not slide panels, fold leaves or refit accessories until the agreed handling requirements are met.
How long will the new finish last?
Coating life depends on preparation, adhesion, exposure and how the doors are used and maintained. Frequently handled edges and rubbing contact points experience different wear from sheltered frame faces.
Correcting alignment or hardware faults before coating helps avoid repeated scraping. We explain suitable cleaning and care for the specified finish, including attention to dirt around tracks. Existing corrosion or unstable coatings need assessment rather than simply covering them. Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote.
What affects the cost of respraying aluminium doors?
The main cost drivers are the number and size of doors, access, surface condition and masking complexity. Stacker and bifold systems may involve more edges and moving parts than a comparable sliding opening.
A substantial colour change may require more coats than a similar-colour refresh. Height, repairs, difficult external access and any after-hours requirements also affect the scope. For a whole-home project, list all windows and doors together so the quote can account for shared preparation and the sequence of rooms.
Should you respray or replace aluminium doors?
Respraying is worth considering when the door assemblies remain sound and colour is the main problem. Replacement may be more appropriate if you need different glazing, improved weather performance or a changed opening size.
Have sticking, leaks and damaged hardware investigated separately before making the decision. Paint will not correct failed seals, distorted frames or poor installation. Comparing a defined respray scope with the full replacement scope helps distinguish a cosmetic update from a broader building upgrade.
How do doors fit into a whole-home colour change?
Doors should be considered alongside windows, trims and nearby metalwork before the colour is finalised. Large sliding or folding assemblies can make a small colour difference particularly noticeable.
Check the proposed finish against flooring, brickwork and interior light as well as the external facade. Decide whether both sides of each opening are included. Agreeing these boundaries early helps avoid mismatched returns or a newly painted room framing an unchanged door. A sample or colour reference can guide the discussion.
Preparation & application
How your respray comes together
Assess each opening
We review the frame finish, hardware clearance and access on both sides. Identify any mechanical repairs with the appropriate trade before settling the painting scope.
Protect and prepare
Glass, nearby floors and working components are protected. Cleaning and preparation are selected for the existing substrate, with adhesion checks where needed before the coating system is confirmed.
Coat and plan handover
We apply the agreed colour and review the coated areas. Handover covers handling restrictions, cleaning advice and the sequence for returning doors to ordinary use.

Questions
Aluminium doors: your questions answered
Can you change cream doors to black?
A substantial colour change can be assessed after checking the current finish. We discuss coverage, sheen and the surrounding window colours before confirming a coating system.
Do the door panels need removing?
Not necessarily. We assess access, concealed edges and the door configuration first. Any need for removal or hardware work must be agreed rather than assumed in an onsite painting scope.
Will paint affect glass, tracks or seals?
These areas need protection and clear scope boundaries. Seals and working tracks are not ordinary paint surfaces, and coating must not interfere with the operation of the doors.
Can you match the windows too?
We can assess windows and doors together using an agreed colour reference. Ageing and differences between existing finishes can affect how closely a new coating matches retained surfaces.
Will the work disrupt us?
We respray in place, so nothing is removed. We mask surrounding surfaces, work in sections and agree access times with you before we start, so you can plan around us.
