Anodised aluminium painting
Bronze anodised aluminium can be assessed for painting when the frames are sound but the colour feels dated. The key is preparing the anodised surface for adhesion, not treating it like an existing powder coat.
Can you paint bronze anodised aluminium frames?
Yes, suitable anodised aluminium frames can be painted after assessment and appropriate preparation. Bronze frames are often considered for a change to black or Monument as part of a wider window and door update.
The first step is confirming what finish is actually present. Bronze-coloured metal is not automatically anodised, and an older painted surface may conceal previous work. We assess condition and access before selecting a coating approach. Painting adds a new finish over the prepared surface; it does not produce a new anodised layer.
How does preparation differ from powder-coated aluminium?
Anodising forms an oxide layer on aluminium, while powder coating leaves an applied coating over the metal. That difference means preparation and primer selection cannot simply be copied from a powder coat repaint.
We assess contamination, weathering and any existing overpainting, then plan cleaning and surface preparation for the actual substrate. Adhesion checks help inform whether the proposed coating system is suitable. Glossy or aged areas need proper attention rather than a quick topcoat. Electrocoat applies liquid paint with charged spray and Kremlin equipment, not a replacement anodising process.
How long does painting anodised frames take?
Timing depends on the number of frames, preparation requirements and access to all agreed faces. Adhesion assessment and any issues uncovered in old finishes can affect the sequence before application starts.
An occupied home also needs room access, protection and safe movement planned around the windows. Drying and return to use depend on the selected products and conditions. We explain handling requirements for opening sashes and doors rather than giving a universal timeframe. Any later fitting of blinds or screens should follow the agreed coating care advice.
How durable is paint over anodised aluminium?
Durability depends on adhesion to the prepared surface, the coating system, exposure and maintenance. A colour change will not compensate for contamination or an unsuitable preparation method underneath it.
We discuss the condition of the existing finish and any limitations identified during assessment. Coastal deposits, cleaning products and rubbing hardware can all affect the new surface. Follow the specified care guidance and address mechanical contact points that could scrape the finish. Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote, rather than assumed from the original anodised finish.
What affects the cost of painting anodised frames?
Frame quantity, size, surface condition and masking detail are the main pricing factors. Confirming the existing finish and preparing it correctly are part of the scope, not optional extras to skip for a colour change.
Height, storeys, exterior access and previous overpainting may add work. A substantial change in colour can require more coats than a same-colour refresh. After-hours requirements also need to be allowed for where relevant. Include doors, sidelights and less visible returns in the initial discussion so the quote reflects the complete appearance you want.
Is painting better than replacing anodised windows?
Painting can suit serviceable windows when the bronze finish is the main reason you want a change. Replacement may be the better option if the frames, glazing or operation need a substantial upgrade.
Have water entry, worn hardware and failed seals assessed independently of the painting decision. New paint does not change glazing performance or repair installation faults. A whole-home review can separate windows worth retaining from openings that need building work. Set those boundaries before choosing the final colour, especially if some frames will be replaced and others retained.
What should you check before choosing black or Monument?
Review a colour reference and sheen against the actual facade and interior finishes before confirming black or Monument. Both can change the visual weight of slim bronze frames, but they are not interchangeable colours.
Lighting, glass reflections and neighbouring materials affect how a dark finish looks. Agree whether internal faces, external faces and visible returns will all change. Where new joinery will sit alongside retained frames, use a shared colour reference and discuss possible finish differences. An opaque painted coating will also look different from the original metallic anodised surface.
Preparation & application
How your respray comes together
Identify the existing finish
We inspect the frames and discuss any previous painting or repairs. The assessment distinguishes an anodised surface from powder coat or older overpainting before the preparation method is selected.
Check adhesion and prepare
Cleaning, surface preparation and any primer requirements are matched to the substrate. Glass and adjoining finishes are protected, with adhesion checks informing the proposed coating system.
Apply the agreed colour
We coat the agreed frame faces and explain handling and care. The handover also confirms which areas were included so retained original finishes are not mistaken for missed work.

Questions
Anodised aluminium painting: your questions answered
Can bronze anodised doors be included with windows?
Yes, doors can be assessed within the same scope. Working tracks, seals and moving contact areas need their own protection and preparation plan rather than being coated indiscriminately.
Will the new paint look metallic like anodising?
An opaque painted finish has a different appearance from anodising. Discuss colour and sheen using a reference before approval, particularly where some original bronze surfaces will remain visible.
Can you paint straight over the anodised finish?
Not without suitable assessment and preparation. Cleaning alone may not establish adequate adhesion, so the coating system and any primer requirements must be chosen for the condition of the surface.
Will painting affect my window warranty?
Check the window supplier’s terms before proceeding if a warranty may still apply. We cannot confirm another supplier’s coverage; our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote.
