What can a louvre and pergola respray refresh?

An onsite respray can refresh suitable aluminium louvres, opening roof structures, pergola frames and fixed screens. It suits owners updating a complete outdoor area and builders coordinating external metalwork with a new colour scheme. The existing structure needs to be sound enough to retain.

Electrocoat uses charged liquid paint applied with Kremlin equipment, not a powder coating oven. We assess the existing finish and reachable surfaces before recommending a coating approach. Deep blade overlaps and enclosed channels need particular attention because their geometry can restrict preparation and spray access.

How are louvres prepared and painted?

We inspect the finish, clean accessible metal and prepare it for the selected paint system before spraying. Glass, paving, nearby walls and outdoor furniture need protection from preparation debris and paint. Access underneath a roof can affect how that protection is arranged.

Moving blade interfaces, motors and seals are masked where required to keep coating clear of operating components. We check the louvre maker's guidance before agreeing which surfaces can be treated. A colour change is not a reason to paint over drains, identification labels or parts that must remain free to move.

How long does a pergola respray take?

Timing depends on roof size, blade layout, access and the condition of the old finish. A simple fixed screen and an opening roof with many overlapping blades involve different amounts of preparation. Weather and the chosen coating system also affect when the area can return to use.

We discuss a work sequence before starting so you can plan around outdoor dining areas and access routes. Do not operate a coated roof until the agreed release checks are complete. Drying and curing are different stages, and the appropriate handling advice depends on the product system and conditions.

How long will the new finish last?

Finish life depends on preparation, adhesion, exposure and ongoing cleaning. A pergola near the coast faces a different maintenance burden from a sheltered courtyard screen. Salt deposits, trapped moisture and dirt around joints can undermine otherwise sound coatings if they are left in place.

We assess existing coating adhesion rather than treating a faded surface as automatically ready to paint. Flaking areas or corrosion may need extra preparation or specialist attention. Ask for care guidance suited to your location and keep cleaning methods consistent with both the coating supplier's and roof maker's advice.

What affects the price?

The main cost drivers are the size of the structure, blade count, height and masking complexity. A strong colour change may need more coats than a same-colour refresh. Access equipment, restricted working space and repairs to failing finishes can also change the scope.

Send photographs showing the entire roof and close views of peeling, chalking or corrosion. Include its approximate dimensions and whether it opens electrically or manually. An onsite assessment helps establish what can be reached safely and what must be excluded, so the quote describes a practical coating job.

Should you respray or replace the structure?

Respraying is worth considering when the metalwork is sound and appearance is the main concern. Replacement or repair may be more appropriate if blades bind, frames are damaged or water management has failed. Paint cannot correct an opening roof that does not work properly.

Have mechanical faults assessed before choosing a cosmetic finish. We can then discuss coating around the retained components rather than hiding problems under a new colour. Compare the full scope of replacement with a respray, including disruption to adjoining finishes and any work required to restore reliable operation.

How are moving blades and roof controls protected?

Moving parts need a separate protection plan, checked against the louvre maker's guidance. We agree how controls will be isolated and which blade positions allow safe access before preparation begins. Motors, seals and moving blade interfaces must not simply be sprayed as though they were fixed framing.

Some assemblies may need a manufacturer or service technician to advise on safe handling. Where access or product guidance makes a surface unsuitable, we identify that limitation rather than promise complete coverage. The agreed handover should address operation as well as the appearance of the accessible coated metal.

Preparation & application

How your respray comes together

01

Assess the assembly

Review photographs, roof operation and existing finish, then confirm accessible surfaces and manufacturer guidance onsite.

02

Protect and prepare

Arrange safe access, protect the outdoor area and mask motors, seals and moving interfaces before preparing the aluminium.

03

Coat and review

Apply the specified liquid coating and review the finish against the agreed scope before discussing operation and care.

Questions

Louvre & pergola respray: your questions answered

Can you match my window colour?

We can assess a colour reference or sample alongside your existing windows. Gloss, texture and weathering affect the result, so agree the intended appearance before work starts.

Do the louvres need removing?

Not necessarily. Reachable surfaces may be treated in place, but overlapping blades or manufacturer restrictions can limit access. Removal, if required, needs a separate agreed plan.

Will painting affect my roof warranty?

Check the louvre maker's warranty conditions before approving a respray. We cannot promise that a third-party coating will preserve every manufacturer warranty.

What warranty does Electrocoat provide?

Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote. Ask how those terms apply to the existing finish, coastal exposure and any surfaces excluded from the coating scope.
