Which garage doors can be resprayed?

Suitable metal panel, tilt and sectional garage doors can be assessed for onsite respraying. This is for owners improving a street-facing facade and builders finishing a wider exterior update. We first check the existing coating and whether the door is mechanically sound.

A sectional door travels in separate hinged sections, while a tilt door moves as a single panel. A roller door rolls up onto a drum and needs a different assessment. See our roller doors hub and roller door painting Sydney page if that describes your door rather than a panel or sectional assembly.

What does the respray process involve?

The process involves cleaning, surface preparation, careful masking and application of a suitable liquid coating. Electrocoat uses electrostatic painting with Kremlin equipment on suitable metal surfaces. We assess paint adhesion and any corrosion before deciding how much preparation the existing door needs.

Tracks, hinges, seals, locks and operating equipment need protection rather than a blanket coat of paint. Section joints and panel edges require particular care so coating does not interfere with movement. We also protect driveway surfaces, nearby brickwork and adjoining trim, with the working boundary agreed before preparation starts.

How long will the garage be unavailable?

Garage access depends on preparation, door configuration, coating requirements and conditions on the day. A wide sectional door with detailed panels can take more work than a plain tilt panel. The coating must also reach a suitable stage before normal movement resumes.

Plan to move vehicles and stored items away from the work area before the agreed start. We discuss pedestrian access and delivery needs so nobody has to pass through active spraying. Ask when the door can be operated and when it can be cleaned, because those instructions depend on the product system.

How durable is a resprayed garage door?

Durability depends on the existing surface, adhesion, sun exposure and how the door is used. A west-facing door can weather differently from one beneath a deep overhang. Dirt around panel joints and repeated contact with objects can affect the appearance of a new finish.

A coating refresh does not repair worn rollers, tired springs or misaligned sections. Have operating faults assessed before painting so mechanical work does not damage a newly coated surface. We discuss suitable cleaning and care at handover, including avoiding harsh products that may harm the selected finish or adjacent seals.

What determines the quote?

Door size, panel detail, surface condition and access are the main pricing factors. Changing from a dark colour to a pale finish may require more coats than refreshing the same shade. Peeling areas, corrosion repairs and complex masking can add preparation work.

Photographs of the full door, its edges and any damaged areas help define the initial scope. Tell us if the driveway is steep, shared or close to a public footpath. We can then assess how to protect surrounding surfaces and organise the work without assuming every garage has an open, level driveway.

Is respraying better than replacing the door?

Respraying can suit a sound door when colour or surface wear is the main issue. Replacement deserves consideration where panels are badly damaged, safety features are unreliable or the assembly no longer meets your practical needs. Painting is not a mechanical upgrade.

Compare a coating quote with the full replacement scope, including tracks, controls and making good around the opening where relevant. If the door needs servicing, resolve that scope first. Retaining a working assembly can avoid unnecessary removal, but the final choice should reflect condition and function as well as appearance.

How do you plan around a shared driveway?

A shared driveway needs an agreed access arrangement before work begins. We discuss vehicle movements, pedestrian routes and the area needed to prepare and coat the door safely. Neighbours and building managers may need notice if the working zone affects their normal access.

For strata properties, confirm the relevant approval process before changing an external door colour. Where public access or tight boundaries limit the work area, additional planning may be required. We set out practical constraints in the scope rather than assuming the entire driveway can be closed whenever spraying is convenient.

Preparation & application

How your respray comes together

01

Check the door type

Confirm whether the door is panel, tilt, sectional or a drum-style roller door, then assess its finish and condition.

02

Arrange access and masking

Agree vehicle arrangements and protect adjacent surfaces, seals, tracks and operating hardware before preparing the metal.

03

Spray and hand over

Apply the agreed finish, review accessible coated areas and explain when operation and cleaning can resume.

Exterior metalwork colour changes

Questions

Garage door respray Sydney: your questions answered

Can the garage door match my front gate?

We can assess the gate colour or a physical sample. Differences in substrate, gloss and texture affect how a colour reads, so confirm the proposed finish before approving it.

Can you paint over peeling patches?

Loose coating needs assessment and preparation rather than concealment. The extent of failure determines whether a respray is suitable and what repairs or exclusions are needed.

Can you coat the door while it stays installed?

Often that is the aim, subject to safe access and the door design. We confirm reachable surfaces and any limitations around folded sections during assessment.

What warranty comes with the work?

Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote. Existing coating condition, excluded parts and maintenance requirements should be clear before you accept the scope.

Don't replace it. Electrocoat it.
