Steel window respray
Refinish sound steel window frames while retaining the slender profiles that suit established homes. We assess rust, existing paint and glazing details in Eastern Suburbs and Lower North Shore properties before recommending a coating scope.
Which steel windows can be resprayed?
Steel windows can be resprayed when the frames are sufficiently sound and their condition allows a suitable preparation and coating system. Fine steel profiles in established luxury homes often warrant careful assessment before replacement is considered.
We look at visible rust, paint stability and the relationship between the frame, glazing and surrounding masonry. A decorative repaint is not a repair for severely deteriorated sections. Opening lights, joints and inaccessible faces may require input from a specialist repairer before painting can proceed. The aim is a defined scope that respects the existing window.
How are rust and old paint treated?
Loose or unstable material needs appropriate removal, and rusted areas require preparation followed by a compatible primer. The treatment depends on the extent of corrosion, the existing coatings and access to the affected steel.
We do not treat a topcoat as a substitute for rust preparation. Older coatings may also need assessment for hazardous materials before disturbance, particularly in heritage properties. Glass, glazing compounds and surrounding finishes require protection. Once the substrate and primer requirements are established, a suitable liquid finish can be applied using electrostatic equipment where appropriate.
How long does a steel window respray take?
The schedule depends heavily on the condition of the steel and the repairs needed before coating. Small panes, detailed profiles and difficult access can add preparation and protection work even where the total frame area is modest.
Allow for any separate glazing or metal repairs before the painting sequence is finalised. Primer and finish requirements, ventilation and weather conditions influence application and return to use. We agree which rooms and openings are affected, rather than offering a fixed turnaround before inspecting the windows.
How long will refinished steel windows last?
The useful life of the finish depends on rust preparation, primer selection, exposure and ongoing care. Moisture trapped around joints or damaged glazing details can undermine a coating if the cause remains unresolved.
An inspection can identify visible problems, but concealed corrosion may only become apparent during preparation or repair. Discuss any revised scope before covering newly exposed damage. Regular checks for coating damage and moisture entry help you arrange maintenance before deterioration spreads. Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote.
What affects steel window respray costs?
Condition, detail and access usually matter as much as the number of windows. Rust treatment, removal of failing paint and specialist repairs can make one opening much more involved than another.
Height, storeys, delicate surrounding interiors and intricate masking also affect the quote. Significant colour changes may require more coats than a refresh in a similar shade. Include any restricted work periods or after-hours requirements when discussing the property. Glazing repairs and major metal repairs should be clearly identified so you understand what the painting quote includes.
Should heritage steel windows be repainted or replaced?
Repainting may retain valued original profiles when the steel remains repairable and the main issue is the finish. Replacement may be necessary where deterioration or performance requirements cannot reasonably be addressed through repair and recoating.
For a heritage-listed property, check with council before changing colours, disturbing original material or replacing windows. Properties within a conservation area may also have requirements to investigate. We cannot determine approval requirements from appearance alone. Obtain relevant advice before authorising work, particularly where the proposal changes the visible character of the facade.
What matters in Eastern Suburbs and Lower North Shore homes?
Exposure and interior protection need individual planning in these homes, particularly near the harbour or coast. Salt deposits, damp junctions and shaded elevations can present different preparation concerns within the same property.
Luxury renovations may also involve finished stone, timber flooring or decorative wall surfaces close to the windows. Confirm protection boundaries and access routes before work begins. Coordinate with the builder, glazier or heritage adviser where needed so one trade does not damage another trade’s completed work. The coating scope should follow the repair sequence.
Preparation & application
How your respray comes together
Assess steel and glazing
We review the visible frame condition and identify areas needing further investigation. Heritage restrictions, glazing concerns and any separate repair responsibilities are discussed before the coating scope is agreed.
Prepare and prime
Appropriate preparation addresses unstable paint and corrosion. A compatible primer is selected for the prepared substrate, with surrounding glass and finishes protected throughout the agreed work.
Finish and explain maintenance
We apply the specified finish to the prepared areas and review the result. Handover includes coating care, handling advice and attention to joints where moisture problems could recur.

This photograph shows a custom steel staircase in Milk Cloud on a new build, not a steel window or a heritage restoration. Window work needs its own assessment because glazing, corrosion around joints and historic fabric create different preparation requirements.

Questions
Steel window respray: your questions answered
Can you retain the original steel profiles?
Recoating can retain existing profiles where the frames are sound enough for the proposed work. Any repairs or replacement sections need assessment by an appropriate specialist before painting.
Will the rust come back?
That depends on preparation and whether moisture sources or concealed corrosion remain. We assess visible deterioration and explain limitations rather than promising that a surface coating will resolve every rust issue.
Can you paint around existing glass?
Often the glazing can remain, subject to its condition and access. Glass and glazing details require protection, and damaged putty or seals may need separate attention before coating.
Do I need heritage approval for a colour change?
Check with council if the property is heritage listed or subject to heritage controls. Do not assume that a repaint is exempt, particularly if the colour or original material will change.
