What can a lift door respray refresh?

An onsite respray can refresh suitable metal lift landing doors, car interior panels and surrounding architraves. It suits strata committees, building managers and commercial owners updating tired finishes while retaining serviceable components.

We inspect the existing surface and identify which parts can be coated. Decorative panels need a different scope from operating equipment. Buttons, displays, door tracks and safety devices are not treated as paintable surfaces. A finish update does not repair a faulty lift or change its operating performance.

How are lift doors prepared and painted?

The process involves cleaning, preparing and masking the agreed metal surfaces before applying a suitable liquid coating. Electrocoat uses Kremlin electrostatic spray equipment, with charged paint attracted to suitably prepared conductive metal.

Preparation depends on the current finish, contamination and any corrosion. We protect adjacent walls, floors and components that must remain free of paint. The preparation and coating system are assessed together, rather than assuming every existing surface will accept the same treatment. Colour and sheen are agreed before the work proceeds.

How long does lift respraying take?

Timing depends on the number of landings, the car interior scope, preparation and the agreed work windows. Drying and return to use depend on the product system and conditions, not a fixed allowance for every building.

A floor-by-floor programme can help keep the lift in service where the work and safe operating arrangements allow. Some stages may require temporary restrictions or downtime. We discuss those stages before booking, including whether another lift or an alternative accessible route is available for occupants.

Can lift painting be done after hours?

After-hours work can be planned to reduce disruption to residents, visitors and office occupants. Keeping the lift operational throughout every stage cannot be assumed, so building management needs to agree the access and isolation arrangements.

Where needed, coordination with the lift maintenance contractor can help establish safe boundaries around moving doors and equipment. Low-odour coating options and product selection are discussed with building management, alongside ventilation and occupancy requirements. Low odour does not remove the need for controlled work areas or appropriate ventilation.

How long will the new finish last?

The life of a lift finish depends on preparation, coating compatibility and daily wear. Trolleys, deliveries and repeated contact at door edges can wear surfaces differently from protected architraves.

Cleaning methods also matter. Building cleaners should follow the care advice for the selected finish rather than using abrasive pads or unapproved chemicals. Existing corrosion or damaged substrates need assessment before painting. We explain maintenance expectations for the proposed system, and our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote.

What affects the price of lift door respraying?

The main price drivers are the number of doors and floors, surface condition, masking complexity and after-hours requirements. Car interiors add a separate access and protection scope from landing doors alone.

A colour change may need more coats than a same-colour refresh. Restricted loading access, staged visits and required repairs can also affect the quote. For a useful assessment, provide photographs of the doors, architraves and car panels, plus floor counts and the building manager’s access requirements. We confirm the scope during an onsite inspection.

Should lift doors be resprayed or replaced?

Respraying is worth considering when the metalwork is sound and the main concern is appearance. Replacement or specialist repair needs separate consideration when doors are damaged, unreliable or no longer suitable for the building.

The lift maintenance contractor should assess operational concerns, not the painting crew. A respray cannot correct door alignment, worn mechanisms or safety faults. Agree those responsibilities early so cosmetic work is not used to cover a maintenance issue. We quote the coating work once the suitable surfaces and exclusions are clear.

Preparation & application

How your respray comes together

01

Review the lift scope

Walk through the landings and car with the building representative. Record the surfaces, access constraints and any issues that need referral to the lift maintenance contractor before coating work is scheduled.

02

Agree the staged programme

Set the work sequence, resident notices and protection requirements. Discuss after-hours access, ventilation and temporary restrictions so the building manager can explain how people will move around the work areas.

03

Prepare, coat and review

Prepare and coat the agreed metalwork, then review the finish with the nominated contact. Confirm care instructions and any return-to-use restrictions before protection is removed and each stage is handed back.

Questions

Lift door respray Sydney: your questions answered

Can you change the lift door colour?

Yes, a colour change can be considered after checking the substrate and existing finish. We agree a colour and sheen, with a sample where appropriate, before coating the nominated surfaces.

Do lift doors need to be removed?

Not necessarily. Suitable faces may be coated in place, subject to safe access and protection of operating parts. Any removal or isolation requirements need discussion with the building and its lift maintenance contractor.

Can you match existing architraves?

We can assess a colour match against a suitable reference. Age, lighting and differences in sheen can affect the result, so an agreed sample is more useful than a colour name alone.

What warranty applies to the coating?

Our written warranty terms are confirmed in your quote. The assessment considers the substrate, preparation and coating system, with care requirements explained for the building’s cleaning and maintenance team.
